The Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra or Sacral Plexus

The Sanskrit name for the Sacral Chakra is Svadisthana which means “one’s own place”.  This chakra is generally accepted as the second chakra and is located approximately 2 inches below the “belly button” in the lower abdomen.  As would fit with this location, the sacral chakra is considered as being related to the uterus, large bowel, prostate, ovaries and testes. (In the foetus the testes develop in the lower abdomen, thus linking them with the sacral chakra, – the testes descend into the scrotum before birth.) The sacral chakra is also involved with the lower part of the spine and the bladder.

Whereas the first chakra is satisfied with surviving, the sacral chakra wakens up the desire to enjoy the experience of survival.  In contrast to the root chakra, which “used” sex simply as a means to procreation, this chakra “uses” it for pleasure! It affects how the emotions work, how well the brain can be used for things like making decisions, life skills, how well one controls oneself, whether or not one gets addicted to something, as well as the ability to handle sexual relationships and creativity. The sacral chakra is about pleasure and has a tendency to grab whatever brings pleasure, but these have the potential to become addictions, whether they are chocolate, alcohol, drugs or sex! Trapped within such addiction is believed to be an attempt to recreate a pleasure of the past (whether in this life or a past life) and simply quitting (going “cold turkey”) rarely works.  A better plan would be to stay fully aware of the habit, but let go of the addition slowly – let it drip away; it no longer pleases your chakra needs.  You need to focus on pleasure rather than the pursuit of pleasure, in this way you will leave your addiction behind you because your conscious awareness tells you that you no longer need that habit which leads to the ultimate pleasure!

When it is open and functioning properly, the Sacral chakra is a whirling frenzy of creative, inspired energy.  The balance between male and female, active and passive, yin and yang is achieved here in the Sacral Chakra.

The sacral chakra helps us to learn how to make our own reality and can be affected by emotions like love, fear and hate. If we concentrate on good choices instead of bad or negative ones, we will have positive outcomes, but if not, then fear and irrational things could happen.  This chakra also works to help us balance out lives and teaches us to understand that there is more to life’s relationships than just accepting or rejecting something or someone.

If our sacral chakra is balanced and healthy, we have the proper motivation to make the life decisions needed for survival and growth especial in today’s fast paced world.  Generally we have less physical ailments, feel more confident and in charge of our own emotions; we will also enjoy a more fulfilling sex life. Some of the other positive aspects of this include being more sociable, creative, joyous and independent.

However if the sacral chakra is blocked, it can show up as low back pain, constipation, Pre-menstrual syndrome, problems with menstrual flow, Irritable bowel syndrome, Endometriosis, Testicular disease, prostatic disease, emotional distress, cloudy mental thinking and apathy.  If this chakra becomes really blocked or unbalanced, one is likely to be unable to make simple every day decisions, develop uterine fibroids, or ovarian cysts.  Some of the other negative aspects of this chakra are becoming withdrawn, destructive, despondent, or over-dependent. Blockages and stagnant energy result in heavy emotional burdens and we tend to tire ourselves out with negative emotions such as blame, resentment and guilt. Emotional wounds and battle scars continue to haunt as long as their energetic ghosts remain. We resort to manipulation and power plays to get what we want. Selfishness and victim mentality make their presence known when this chakra is not functioning properly.

Approaching sexuality too early in life or late in life can cause imbalances in this chakra, as well as issues of rape, molestation, or unwarranted sexual shame. Children who are taught sex is wrong, or dirty, or reprimanded for touching or having curiosity about the genitals are at risk for a lifetime of imbalance in this centre unless there is intervention. The result is becoming overly sexually active and awake, to the point of promiscuity, or becoming prudish and cut off from one’s own sexual desire.

In addition, creativity, inspiration and ideas may become blocked. Movements may be stiff and dancing might be out of the question. Perhaps, most of all, intimate relationships suffer greatly because of an inability to allow touch, or to be faithful. Those with a blocked or imbalanced sacral chakra can be prudish, secretive, and even jealous or overly angry, while others are promiscuous, flighty and unable to form deeper intimate connections.

Working with this chakra:

Energizing and balancing:

Physically:

A simple way to help to balance and unblock the sacral chakra is by dancing, laughing and having a good time with our friends.

Visualization

Another way to cleanse the energy of the Sacral Chakra is through visualization; the following exercise is quick and simple to do and will prove to be very beneficial:

  • Take a few deep, relaxing breathsand clear your mind of intentional thoughts.
  • Imagine a vibrant orange lightfilling up the spaces in your lower abdomen, showering your insides with its heat and its brilliant sparks of light. This light offers such excitement; such happiness. Everything it touches is instantly healed.
  • Place your hands just above your body in the area of the Sacral Chakraand feel the warmth that radiates from this inner sun. The light of this energy banishes away the negativity and stagnant energy that has accumulated, opening the portal to increased energy and passion, creativity and joyfulness.

Music or sound:

The note for this chakra is D and the use of tuning forks or singing bowls designed for this note, will open and balance the energy flow in and around the chakra.

The mantra is “o” as in home.  Chanting this manta in the key of “D” whilst focusing the attention on this area of the body can enable us to more consciously access the second chakra.

Crystals and meditation:

By placing any of the orange coloured crystals on the chakra and doing a meditation specifically to re-energise and balance can be very effective. The crystals of choice would include: Carnelian, coral, gold, orange calcite, amber, citrine, gold topaz, peach aventurine and moonstone.

Colour therapy;

This chakra responds to the colour orange, so would respond to anything orange being placed on or near it, whether it is cloths, or crystals.  When both are combined with a meditation specifically written for this chakra, a very effective and significant response could be expected

Herbal infusions, etc:

Coriander and Fennel are both considered as useful for use with the sacral chakra.

Incense:

Orris Root, Gardenia, Damiana are all effective when used in the incense burner.
